In 1664, the British gained control and named the whole area New York, after the Duke of York. Hartsdale became part of the Manor of Philipsborough, presided over by Frederick Phillipse, a Dutch merchant.
After the Revolutionary War, the third and last lord of the manor, also Frederick Phillipse, a great-grandson of the first lord of the manor, and a Tory, fled to England. The state confiscated the family's 90,000 acres stretching from the Bronx to the Croton River and resold it at auction to tenant farmers and other buyers.
Robert Hart, one of the successful bidders bought what is now the intersection of Central Park Avenue and West Hartsdale Avenue which became Hart's Corner. (now known as the Four Corners). In the 1870's the surrounding area became known as Hartsdale.
The main spurt in population occurred in the 1930's through the 1950's - bringing with it new roads homes, schools, religious institutions and commercial and industrial expansion.
One of Hartsdale's attractions is it's proximity to recreational opportunities. There are 19 tennis courts and 7 pools at Anthony E. Veteran Park, in nearby Ardsley.
