POPULATION: 68,381 (Estimated).
AREA: 4.24 square miles. Mount Vernon is the ninth most densely populated city in the nation.
LOCATION: Mount Vernon is bordered on the south by New York City, on the west by Yonkers, on the north by Bronxville and Eastchester and on the east by the Pelhams. It is a densely populated, urban area.
ZONING: Residential - 3,600 to 7,000 square feet. Commercial development is most intense in Mount Vernon. Many apartment buildings.
COMMUTING: Rail service is via the Harlem and New Haven divisions of Conrail which has three stations in Mount Vernon. The New York Thruway is easily accessible as is the Hutchinson River Parkway, Bronx River Parkway and the Cross County Expressway. Bus lines connect with New York City subways as well as service all areas of Mount Vernon. Commuting time to Grand Central is 24 to 27 minutes. Driving time to mid- Manhattan is about 30 minutes. Kennedy and La Guardia airports are less than 45 minutes away. Westchester County Airports is less than 30 minutes away.

LIBRARIES: Mount Vernon Public Library, is the largest library in the county, based on a book stock of approximately 225,000 volumes.
Services: bookmobile service, workshops, literacy tutoring, concerts, lunch time film programs and discussions, large print books, comprehensive professional legal collection, foreign language books. Central library of the county system.
SCHOOLS: 11 elementary, 1 middle school, 1 high school and a creative center. In addition, there is a night school and 6 parochial schools - Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Our Lady of Victory, Sacred Heart School, Saints Peter and Paul School, St. Joseph's Montessori School, and Saint Ursula's. Omne Lutheran - Immaanuel School (and at the college level). Feebbraio School of Music of Westchester.
SHOPPING: On a county wide level Mount Vernon has one of the largest shopping areas. Retail stores on Gramatan Avenue occupy about 6 blocks, on Fourth Avenue 4 blocks, and there is the Eastchester Shopping Center at Mount Vernon Hills. Less than 20 minute drive to White Plains.
RECREATION: Mount Vernon Recreation Department. Conducts programs in 37 areas throughout the city. There is something available within a quarter mile radius of every home. There are 5 parks: Hartley, Memorial Field, Brush Park, Hutchinson and Wilson Woods. Memorial Field contains 10.28 acres and is equipped for exhibition ball games and other athletic events. It has a covered grandstand, which seats about 5,000 and 6 indoor tennis courts.
