POPULATION: 195,086 (Estimated).

AREA: 21 square miles.

ZONING: Residential - 5,000 to 20,000 square feet. Commercial - intense commercial development, industrial shore-line, predominantly apartment buildings.

COMMUTING: Served by the Hudson Division of Metro-North, Yonkers is approximately 27 minutes to Grand Central. Access to the New York State Thruway, the Saw Mill River Parkway, the Bronx River Parkway, Cross County Parkway and the Sprain Brook Parkway. Yonkers is about a 30 minute drive to mid-Manhattan. 20 bus routes provide transportation to all city areas and adjacent towns. Many go to New York directly while others link with the New York City subway system.

LOCATION: Bounded by the Hudson River on the west, New York City on the south, Scarsdale, Tuckahoe and Eastchester on the east, and Hastings-on-Hudson and Greenburgh on the north. Yonkers is the fourth largest city in New York State and the largest in Westchester County. Yonkers was originally founded as a center for commerce and remains predominantly a business community, dominated by apartment buildings and high rises and a large number of one, two and three family homes. There is presently an urban renewal program in progress on the waterfront in Yonkers. Part of the plan is for an office complex, manufacturing facilities, restaurants, and retail shops.

SEWERS: public. GARBAGE: public.
POLICE PROTECTION: paid full time.
FIRE PROTECTION: full time paid and volunteers.

HOSPITALS: Saint John's Riverside, Yonkers General, and Yonkers Professional Hospitals.

LIBRARIES: Yonkers Public Library, (also Broadway Branch), Coyne Park Branch, Crestwood Branch, and the Hudson River Museum Branch. All make up the Yonkers Library System. RECREATION There are two county parks - Tibbets Brook with 161 acres - undeveloped. At Tibbets, there is a swimming pool, baseball, picknicking, children's playground, fishing, skating and softball. There is the Edward J. Murray Memorial Ice Skating Center and Yonkers Raceway. There are a number of playgrounds and parks, tennis courts and picnic areas in the city.
The Hudson River Museum and Planetarium is on the riverfront. Trevor Park is also on the riverfront. It has a sitting area with views of the Hudson River

SHOPPING: There are over 1,000 retail stores in Yonkers. Getty Square is the major shopping area in the center of the city, with every type of retail establishment, including restaurants. Central Avenue and the Cross County Shopping Center are other major shopping areas.
